Mini Bio

Hi, my name is Chris. I am 40 years old, married to Sharon and have 2 young children. I have Chiari and Syringomyelia and went through Decompression surgery in April 2009. The aim of this blog is to raise awareness of this condition and offer support by way of helpful information to other sufferers. This blog represents my own experiences, those of my friends and people that I have met with these conditions and the great advice that I have been offered and my journey towards either acceptance or recovery.

It's not big and its definitely not clever..............

Well, the title says it all, but I was in a situation the other weekend, one which I have been dreading since surgery.

I got into a fight............. not doing things by half either, I got into a fight against 5 (maybe more)other guys who were all coked up and ready for a scrap. They didn't want to fight one by one either, and true to situation, its wasn't exactly Queensbury rules. Feet were flying in and I remember at least 2 kicks to the head.......one of which I faced into as I saw it coming and it was aimed to the side of my head.

There are other details about it but I wont bore you with them.....apart from the fact that I did get knocked down a few times, but kept getting back up and did get a little of my own way. I also had a little help by way of my younger brother......thanks bro, without you I think it may have ended up a lot worse ;)

To make my point, I am OK. No long term damage, no short term effects either apart from a black eye and some harsh gravel rash.

You hear so many stories about very healthy people being seriously hurt or even worse from just one punch, never mind someone who has fairly recently gone through decompression surgery. I certainly wasn't looking for it, but in a strange way I am glad it happened.

There has always been a question in the back of my mind (pardon the pun!) about how I would cope / perform in that situation following such recent surgery. I guess I have got my answer and luckily enough I survived intact........and I don't need any more reminding either that I was lucky, I know I was very lucky indeed.

I guess the brain and the skull are in some ways tough little bits of kit and we Chiarians are not as fragile and susceptible to as much as we think we are.

I am not condoning this kind of behaviour, nor am I bragging. What I am also NOT doing is saying that it's OK for you to go out and do this either, I would avoid it again at all costs if I could. I have thought about this for a few weeks and thought that I would share it as I think that it does add to the whole Chiari conversation in some way.

I have answered a question in my own mind though and one which has been asked of me many times out of curiosity by those that have known me for a long time and knew what I used to get up to in my more foolish days when that was a regular occurrence (Thankfully long in the past!)

You might have strong feelings about this post, and I would be grateful to hear your thoughts.......positive or negative I don't mind. It all helps other understand and perhaps offer answers to questions that have not yet been asked.

Take care all.

Chris

Blimey!

Blimey Chris! I'm annoyed with you that you got yourself in that situation, but relieved that you're OK. Looking forward to hearing the full story over a beer when you get here later this month.

Mike

Thanks Mike

Annoyed and relieved here too! Looking forward to our break over Christmas and catching up on more positive stuff ;)
